10 Things to know before you get a dog

So, you’ve decided you want a puppy. Congratulations! You’re about to welcome a furry little chaos machine into your life. Don’t get me wrong — it’s the best kind of chaos. But before you get swept up in those big eyes and waggy tails, here are ten things every new pet parent really needs to know.

1. Puppies Are Basically Tiny, Furry Toddlers

Adorable? Absolutely. But they also wake you up at ungodly hours, demand constant attention, and somehow find their way into places they shouldn’t. If you’re ready for a full-time job with zero pay (but unlimited cuddles), you’re in the right place.

2. Training Starts on Day One

You don’t need a whistle and a police-dog level routine, but you do need consistency. Start with toilet training, crate training, and “sit.” It’s less about being strict and more about being clear — otherwise your puppy will train you.

3. Socialisation = Future Sanity

Want an adult dog that doesn’t bark at shopping bags or hide from the neighbour’s Labrador? Expose your pup to all kinds of people, sounds, and safe dogs in the first few months. Think of it as a puppy’s version of world travel — minus the passport.

4. Chewing Is a Sport

Your new shoes, table legs, favourite hoodie… nothing is safe. Puppies explore with their mouths. Stock up on chew toys and redirect them fast, unless you’re into rustic, “distressed” furniture.

5. Vets Will Become Your New Best Friend

Vaccinations, worming, flea treatments, microchipping — and that’s just the start. Puppy healthcare is non-negotiable, so budget for it and get a good vet you actually like.

6. Food Matters More Than You Think

Puppy food isn’t just marketing fluff — it’s designed for growth. Keep it consistent, don’t switch brands every week, and avoid overfeeding (a “chubby puppy” might look cute but it’s bad for their joints).

7. Exercise: Less Marathon, More Mini Workouts

Yes, puppies are bundles of energy, but their bones are still growing. Keep walks short and play sessions fun. Overdo it, and you’ll end up carrying a very tired (and surprisingly heavy) puppy home.

8. Grooming: Start Early, Stay Sane

Even if your pup won’t need professional trims, get them used to brushing, nail clipping, and teeth checks early. Future-you will thank present-you when your dog actually sits still for the groomer.

9. Accidents Are Part of the Package

Toilet training is not a one-and-done deal. Stock up on cleaning spray, roll up your favourite rugs for a while, and repeat after me: patience, patience, patience.

10. The Love Is Worth Every Sleepless Night

There will be mess, chewed slippers, and the occasional meltdown. But there will also be tail wags, head tilts, and unconditional love that makes it all worth it. Trust me — life with a puppy is never dull.

And remember…

Getting a puppy isn’t just a cute Instagram moment — it’s a commitment. But if you go in prepared (and armed with chew toys, cleaning spray, and a sense of humour), you’ll end up with a loyal best friend for life.
